How much snow fell in Nashville and Middle Tennessee?

Up to 9 inches of snow fell in some parts of Middle Tennessee overnight Sunday into Monday morning.

The snow came after an unseasonably warm weekend that packed an EF-0 tornado in Giles County, severe storms and tornado warnings across the region and highs in the mid- to upper-70s on New Year's Day.

Nashville saw between 0.5 and 3 inches, but a more intense band of snowfall was concentrated south and southeast of Davidson County, according to Sam Herron, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Nashville.

Bell Buckle, located in Rutherford County, reported around 9 inches of snow.

Snow covers cars in East Nashville on Monday.

Powerful storm systems like the one that swept through Tennessee can pull strong cold fronts in behind them, he said.

"They can produce extreme conditions on either side of the storm system — record highs on one side and very strong cold air and snowfall on the other side," Herron said.

Here's a look at the approximate snowfall totals across Nashville and Middle Tennessee as of Monday:

  • Davidson County: 0.5-3 inches
  • Montgomery County: 1 inch
  • Putnam County: 2-5 inches
  • Rutherford County: 2.5-9 inches (9 inches of snow were reported in Bell Buckle)
  • Smith County: 3-5 inches
  • Williamson County: 2-5 inches
  • Wilson County: 0.5-5 inches

"Observations are collected from a variety of sources with varying equipment and exposures," NWS said. "We thank all volunteer weather observers for their dedication. Not all data listed are considered official."
