The price tag on Nissan Stadium’s proposed $600 million renovation is rising — so much so that officials are weighing the possibility of a brand new stadium.

The Tennessee Titans want to upgrade the stadium area — essentially creating a new neighborhood along the East Bank and making the stadium “Super Bowl ready.” Now, new cost estimates show the total renovation cost would be closer to $1.2 billion due to a heavy infrastructure overhaul.

The issue

Necessary renovations to the stadium include replacing its concrete frame with steel + installing new mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems. Some of the desired upgrades include a new scoreboard and other features to enhance the fan experienceall contributing to the rising cost.

In light of this, Titans officials will “pause” renovation plans as the team explores other options — one being the possibility of constructing a new stadium. No additional details have been announced regarding the projected cost of a new stadium.

The Las Vegas Raiders’ Allegiant Stadium cost $2 billion + Los Angeles Rams’ and Chargers’ new SoFi Stadium cost $5 billion. Both opened in 2020. In the event a new stadium is built, it’s possible the team will explore an indoor facility to further boost its Super Bowl hosting chances.

What they’re saying

“Together with the Titans, we are evaluating the costs and benefits of multiple scenarios. Revised cost estimates require us to closely review whether a new stadium would be a better long-term financial decision. We won’t settle for anything but the best-case scenario for Nashville.” — Mayor John Cooper
