Hello Friday. April 26 2024 Mon., Jan. 17 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Today, we’re remembering his presence in Nashville + what you can do to honor his life and legacy. How is Dr. King connected to Nashville?
During a speech at Fisk University on Apr. 20, 1960, Dr. King said, “I came to Nashville not to bring inspiration, but to gain inspiration from the great movement that has taken place in this community.”
He visited Nashville many times to deliver speeches, again on May 3, 1964 to meet with leaders of the Nashville sit-ins before speaking to a crowd of about 2,000. He also spoke at Vanderbilt University in 1962 and 1967.
In 2018, Nashville renamed a portion of Charlotte Avenue to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. + a historical marker was placed in 2018 near the Martin Luther King Jr. Bridge (intersection of Clarksville Pike and Cliff Drive).

Editor's pick: The late Betty White had no major ties to Nashville — at least, we're not aware of any — but Donut Distillery has created a pack of donuts in her memory. I plan to swing by today for a donut topped with pink sugar, a nod to Betty’s character Rose on “Golden Girls.”
